Behind the Scenes Sotela

BTS: Meet Sotela’s Dressmaker, Manuel

I’d like to introduce you to our secret weapon here at Sotela, Manuel. He is in charge of production and assists with patterns and samples for our pre-development. Basically, he ensures all the designs look amazing and your garments are well-made.

Once designs are finalized and patterns are cut, Manuel sews the samples and makes any final adjustments. His feedback is important during the sample making phase because it helps finalize the garment for production. After the 0-5 sizes are created, Manuel works with our fit model to perfect the 6-10 range. Again, he sews each sample and makes pattern adjustments until everything is finalized. We usually go through 8-9 sample revisions and Manuel does it all!

We are so lucky to have such a kind, hard-working dressmaker on our team. If you’ve ordered from Sotela within the past several months, it was sewn with care by Manuel!

We asked Manuel a few questions so you can also get to know him–

What is your job position here at Sotela?

I am a sample-maker and dressmaker. I sew all of the samples as well as the garments for production.

How long have you worked at Sotela?

I started working here in June 2019.

How long have you been a dressmaker?

I’ve been sewing clothing for 18 years. My past experience includes sewing samples for Akiko, Myne, and Bijan Andre.

How and where did you learn how to sew?

I learned how to sew in Mexico making shoes. I was introduced to a sewing machine when I was little and kept running into them hitting my head. My dad taught me how to sew because he made boots and shoes at home.

What is your favorite thing about working at Sotela?

My favorite thing about Sotela is the atmosphere. My co-workers and boss are nice and make work fun. They make it comfortable to voice my creative ideas and opinions. I feel like we are all heard here at work.

What is your favorite Sotela garment to sew?

I enjoy sewing the Esperanza pant in corduroy.

What is your favorite food?

I love Seafood. My favorite dish is Campechana, which is a shrimp and octopus cocktail.

What do you like to do during your free time?

I enjoy watching documentaries on YouTube, walking at the park, and cooking. I like making Pozole and hope to bring it to work one day for a potluck.

Since we are such a small company, we all wear many hats. As of now, Manuel is our only dressmaker. If you have any questions for Manuel, feel free to leave them below!
