BTS: Meet Sotela’s Pattern Cutter, Becca

Becca is Sotela’s newest addition and she cuts all your orders! She works with us part-time to not only cut garments, but also with everything else from marketing to planning our spring/summer collection. It’s great to have someone on the team who is so well-rounded because when you have a small company, it’s usually all hands on-deck! She is also working on some secret projects that involve our fabric scraps 😉

We really hit the jackpot with this little team of ours! And without further adieu– meet Becca.

What is your job position here at Sotela?

I am the pattern cutter at Sotela. I’ve been working on several secret projects to help Sotela upcycle fabric waste.

How long have you worked at Sotela?

I have been working at Sotela for about a month and a half.

Where did you hear about Sotela and how did you hear about this position?

I had been a long time follower of Sotela after learning about the company through Factory45. I reached out to Hanna over the summer to see if any positions were available, but she didnt have anything at that time. Then about a month later she posted the position for a pattern cutter and now I’m here.

For those who don’t know, my background in ethical clothing manufacturing came from my time at Factory45. The program helped me get from idea to launch via Kickstarter.

How long have you been a pattern cutter/dressmaker?

This is my first time working professionally as a pattern cutter, but I have been cutting and making clothes for the past 15 years. I am very familiar with this type of work and love being able to do it on a bigger scale!

How and where did you learn how to sew?

I am mostly self-taught. I made my first garment with my grandmother when I was 11 and continued from there with an interest in making clothes.

What do you like about working at Sotela?

Working at Sotela is my dream job because I get to work in garment production at a company that cares deeply about sustainability, ethical production, and inclusivity. I care a lot about seeing these qualities grow in the fashion industry and it is an honor to work and learn from a company striving toward the same goal.

What is your favorite Sotela garment?

My favorite Sotela garment is the Ryan Trouser in tencel. I love that it has a polished trouser look, but can also be worn as a jogger depending on how you style it.

What is your favorite food?

My favorite food is white Cheddar Mac n Cheese.

What do you like to do during your free time?

During my free time I love being with my husband and one year old son. I also love making clothes for myself and watching The Office.

Where can we find you?

You can find me sharing my clothing on Instagram @36pieces.
