My mom bought me a sewing machine in grad school because I couldn’t stop talking about how much I wanted to make my own clothes. Even before I started my pledge to be more sustainable, I had a desire to personalize my clothes. This was also around the same time I got into blogs and A Pair & a Spare was the reason why I set out to learn my machine and make clothes.
This pencil skirt is the first thing I’ve ever made. Well, after the practice skirt I made that was a bit too tight haha. Pencil skirts are pretty easy, but sewing takes practice and patience. I had to take in this skirt many times because I didn’t want to make the mistake I did with the practice skirt and make it too tight. I still want to fix it because I don’t think it is perfect, but I really wanted to wear it in Chicago since I knew it would go well with my sneakers.
Sneakers: New Balance
I wore this outfit in Chicago on our sightseeing day. It was really hot and we did a lot of walking so you bet I wore my sneakers and my wardrobe staple. J made fun of me and said I looked like a professional who was going for a run. Sneakers aren’t only for exercising friends and they look best with skirts, shorts and jeans. Just make sure your bottoms are form fitting and your sneakers aren’t too chunky.
While in Chicago, we went to a few restaurants that were unbelievable! If you ever go to Chicago check these places out:
Meat on Halstead
Lou Malnati’s (amazing Chicago style pizza)
Girl and a Goat
Xoco (Rick Bayless restaurant)
Willis Tower (go to the skydeck)
Architectural tour along the river
I don’t know if I’ve convinced you yet that sneakers are amazing and go with many outfits, but if I have, check out New Balance sneakers especially the classics like the pic below. Also, here are other examples of sneakers with skirts, dresses and shorts!
